How It Started

Hi there! Welcome to our blog. If you already read the About Us section, then you already know a little bit from us, but I want to tell you how “Her Wine His Whisky” started.

As we said before, we both enjoy drinking wine and Jose enjoys whisky too (I’m sorry whisky fans, I’ve try but I still don’t like it). Everyone that knows us personally and that has come to our house knows there is always wine and whisky available.

These are some of the options we had at home at some point.

We love trying new things and we always have variety at home, so for almost 2 years, before we started our Instagram account, we began to take photos of the bottles to remember what we have tried and that way we wouldn't repeat (unless it's one of our favorites of course).

We had a folder with 600+ photos! We had to do something with that, am I right?. So, we decided to create @herwinehiswhisky to share what we were trying and what we liked.

But how did we get to the point of trying so many different wines and whisky?

That is another story that goes way back.

My love for wines started when I was in college thanks to the influence of my dad. I used to drink mainly reds until my doctor told me that I had to give it up due to my migraines - I know this is a misconception, but I followed my doctors advice - and for about 6 years I only drank white and sparkling wines, expanding and improving my palate a bit.

When we moved to the Bay Area, approximately one hour and a half from Napa Valley, I discovered a whole different world of wine. I started drinking red wine again, learned more about tasting, the different aspects between grape varieties, how there were different techniques to make wine, etc.

Being this close to one of the most famous wine growing regions in the world made me want to learn more and expand my palate. After 5 years living in California and trying things on our own, I decided to do a wine certification to learn even more and wow! let me tell you, I thought I knew quite a bit about wine, but I was wrong!. There are so many things I didn’t know, and even after finishing a certification, there are a lot of things that I still don’t know.

I have the feeling that I'll never stop learning and I'll have many things to share with you. The world of wine is so big! You'll see what I mean.

As for my husband and his history with whisky, this is undoubtedly the favorite drink of most Venezuelans, it is the drink that can never be missing at a wedding, party, events, etc. So, like me, he grew up enjoying whisky from his college years.

What he didn't know is that the only thing he used to drink was blended whisky and that there are many other different types. It wasn't until we moved to California, during my dad's first visit that he bought Jose a bottle of Glenfiddich to share that he realized there was something called "Single Malt Scotch Whisky". Wow! The things he was missing, am I right?.

That day he started looking for information about whisky - he was intrigued by it and, as a good engineer, he wanted to investigate - and he found a YouTube channel called "Whiskey Vault". This is a fun and informative channel of 2 whisky sommeliers from Austin, TX with a lot of whisky reviews from all around the world.

As soon as Jose finished watching a couple of videos he was hooked! Realizing there was a lot things that he didn’t know about whisky like the differences in taste between the regions of Scotland, differences between countries, type of barrels, the different ways of distilling whiskey, flavors, etc. was the spark that made my husband so passionate about whisky.

The bottle that start it all. The aha moment in Jose’s whisky journey.

That is my dad on the right. He and California are the biggest influences in our wine and whisky journey.

There you have it, that is how our passion for this industry started and the beginnings of our blog. Now we are taking this to the next level; there is a lot more to learn and share with you, are you in?. This journey continues!
